The Butcher of Mitcham

In March 1862, in the Croydon magistrates' court, a butcher of seventy stood accused by a servant girl of sixteen — the loudest moment in a life that mostly left its mark only when things went wrong.

This is the story of George Winders and Elizabeth Hards: a trade learned in an Oxfordshire village, a marriage in Holborn, twenty years as a butcher on the edge of London, and a slow descent through debt, the Marshalsea prison and widowhood into a long and difficult old age in the Surrey villages of Mitcham and Carshalton.
